Best done in early autumn, before the heating season starts rather than during the week everybody else calls.

Two things override everything on this page. If anyone has symptoms of carbon monoxide exposure — headache, nausea or dizziness that improves outdoors — leave the building and call the gas utility or the fire service, not a duct company. And if a dryer smells of burning while it is running, stop using it: lint is an ignition source and that smell is the warning.

Signs to look for

  • Dust on the blower housing or around the filter slot
  • The system running longer to reach the same temperature
  • A filter slot that does not close properly, which means unfiltered air

How the work is done

  1. Pull the blower assembly out rather than cleaning it in the cabinet
  2. Clean the wheel vane by vane, which is where the loss of airflow actually is
  3. Clean the coil from the correct side and check the drain pan and line
  4. Seal the filter housing so unfiltered air is not bypassing it
